Levante and Poniente – The Two Winds That Shape Tarifa

Levante and Poniente – these are the two winds you’ll hear about most in Tarifa. Locals discuss them in bars at night, and in the morning, wind enthusiasts check the forecast to see which will prevail. But what makes these winds so special?

They are like siblings – two forces, as different as Yin and Yang, yet together they bring balance to Tarifa. These local winds are influenced by the Venturi effect in the Strait of Gibraltar. Unlike seasonal winds, they can appear at any time, meaning your chances of experiencing Levante or Poniente are always 50/50. Kitesurfing spots Tarifa Levante Poniente should stop sound like abracadabra!

Levante – The Powerful Eastern Wind

What is Levante?
Levante is strong, warm, and dry. Blowing from the east, it often arrives with full intensity, immediately dominating the coastline. Wind speeds typically range from 20 to 50 knots.

This wind cuts through the mountains, stirs up sand dunes, and flattens ocean waves. Since it can be unpredictable, it demands respect. If not handled properly, it may push kitesurfers far out to sea. Even migrating birds hesitate before crossing to Africa during strong Levante days.

Why Kitesurf in Levante?

Despite its intensity, Levante is an excellent wind for kitesurfing.
•The ocean remains flat, making it perfect for high jumps.
•Kites fill with wind easily, requiring less effort to launch.
•Advanced riders enjoy the powerful boost for Big Air tricks.

However, it’s important to select the right kite size and stay within designated kitesurf zones for safety.

Poniente – The Cool & Consistent Western Wind

What is Poniente?

Poniente comes from the ocean, bringing a cool and stable breeze. Unlike Levante, it builds up gradually throughout the day, offering calmer conditions in the morning and stronger sessions in the afternoon.

This wind is ideal for hydrofoiling, directional boards, and relaxed freeride sessions. During summer, it typically reaches 15-20 knots, making it a comfortable wind for all skill levels.
